about

Patashnik was originally released by R&S Records/Apollo in February 1994. It was number 1 in NME's Independent Chart in March 1994 and reached number 50 in the UK official album chart.

The track Novelty Waves was used in Michel Gondry's Levi's 501 Jeans "Drugstore" spot, and holds - according to the Guinness World Records 2004, the record for "Most awards won by a TV commercial".

This reissue contains the bonus 12-track album Patashnik 2.

New Musical Express, February 19th 1994.

WELCOME TO ambient hell. Not where Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michel Jarre play endlessly and the weary are revived with peppermint tea, something far more subtle than that. And frightening.
At the end of last year, Orb collaborator Thomas Fehlman stated that ambient techno would have to become scary in 1994 if it wanted to avoid becoming 'new age' music for the '90s. Norway's Geir Jenssen, aka Biosphere, knew that already - and on 'Patashnik' he leaps from behind the bushes shouting 'boo' at all the right moments.
The fun thing is that most people listening don't have the remotest clue he’s going to do it; and the malleability of electronic music means moods can be switched literally at the flick of a switch.
The casual buyer will probably spot the Apollo label (the ambient arm of Belgium's R&S that issued the first Aphex Twin material) and prepare for layers of serene samples. Instead we get the title track's warm, looped melodies and reassuring voices turning into the hollow coldness of 'Mir', or the lolloping serenity of 'Seti Project' going breakbeat bonkers two minutes in. Jenssen takes dichés like birdsong or running water and gives them a new identity, everyday objects distorted by night-time shadows.
Fortunately, his taste for a piss-take stops this from becoming a grim-fest. "Can you imagine an extra-terrestrial disc jockey?" he asks on 'Seti...' Not really. And then, most chillingly, there's a track called 'Botanical Dimensions': Mr Jenssen, you cannot be serious!
Biosphere has saved ambient music from death by herbal tea and flotation tank. And just in the patashnik of time. (8)
